3 CPUsDie CPU (Central Processing Unit = Prozessor) ist die zentrale
Recheneinheit deines Computers und damit auch zum größten Teil an der
Geschwindigkeit beteiligt. Sie ist bei fast allen Aufgaben
(mit-)entscheident für die benötigte Zeit in der diese ausgeführt
werden.

[1] Der schnellste 486er für den Sockel 2 war der DX/2 mit 66 MHz; der
Pentium Overdrive mit 63 (für Systeme mit 25 MHz Boardtakt) und 83 MHz
(für solche mit 33 MHz Boardtakt) wurde erst später vorgestellt.
Obwohl der Sockel A die gemeinsame Basis für eine Vielzahl von
Prozessoren der AMD Athlon-Familie (32 Bit) bildet, sind im Laufe der Zeit
wesentliche Änderungen bei der Spannungsversorgung und beim FSB-Takt
vollzogen worden. Der FSB erreichte Taktraten von 100 MHz (DDR200), 133MHz
(DDR266), 166MHz (DDR333) und 200MHz (DDR400). Somit kann bei weitem nicht
jede Sockel A CPU auf jedem Sockel A Mainboard betrieben werden.
Letztendlich hilft nur ein Blick in die Kompatibilitätsliste der
Mainboardhersteller.
Dem Pentium Pro (Bauform: Sockel 8) war im Desktop-Markt kein großer
Erfolg beschieden, da er nur 32-Bit-Code schnell ausführen konnte (das
ging aufgrund der veränderten Architektur deutlich schneller als beim
Pentium); 16-Bit-Code, wie er 1996 noch häufig vorkam, bremste den
Prozessor dagegen aus, so dass er dort nicht einmal so schnell war wie ein
Gleichgetakteter Pentium.
Dem im Pentium Pro verwendete P6-Kern war später dann doch Erfolg
beschieden: Leicht verändert fand er sich im Pentium II wieder. Bis zum
Pentium 4 (der komplett neu entwickelt wurde) basieren sämtliche
Intel-Prozessoren auf dem Pentium Pro-Kern.
Das PPGA, FC-PGA und FC-PGA2 alle den gleichen Sockel 370 nutzen, heißt
leider nicht, das eine CPU in allen Boards mit dem Sockel370 funktioniert.
Grundsätzlich gelten diese Regeln:
Genaue Informationen zu diesen Fragen findet man zumeist beim Hersteller des Motherboards (Kapitel 7.4 und Kapitel 13.2 geben weiteren Aufschluß über Hersteller des Boards und seine Webseite).
Der Sockel 423 wird und wurde ein Flop durch die Ankündigungen des
nächsten Sockels vor dem Erscheinens des Pentium 4. Der neue Sockel 478
hat im Herbst 2001 den Sockel 423 abgelöst, neue Pentium 4-CPUs erscheinen
nicht mehr für den Sockel 423. Eine Nutzung neuerer So478-CPUs (mit einem
FSB von 100 MHZ) ist aber teilweise mit Hilfe von Adaptern möglich.
In diesem Kapitel sollen technische Daten aufgeführt werden, es ist
aber auch ganz gut als "Historie der CPUs" zu gebrauchen.

Den verwendeten CPU-Typ kann man unter Windows z.B. mit "WCPUID"
feststellen, offizielle Homepage: http://www.h-oda.com. Falls der Download dort
zu langsam ist reicht das Suchen nach WCPUID bei jeder Suchmaschine um
genügende Ergebnisse hervorzubringen. Alternativ kann man das ähnliche
CPU-Z verwenden, die Herstellerhomepage lautet http://www.cpuid.com.
Eine weitere Freeware wäre CPUInfo von http://www.pcanalyser.de/deu/index.html
Für DOS ist Dr. Hardware geeignet. Man kann es auf der offiziellen

Unter Linux ist (falls vorhanden) 'cat /proc/cpuinfo' möglich, bei vielen
Distributionen gibt es auch das Paket cpuid (Für Debian: apt-get install
cpuid; Andere Distributionen bieten ähnliche Pakete an).
Mit der wachsenden Beliebtheit von tragbaren Rechnern (Notebooks,
Subnotebooks, Tablet-PCs) rücken auch die dort verbauten Prozessoren
stärker in den Blickpunkt. Generell kann man mehrere Typen von Prozessoren
unterscheiden:
Insbesondere der Pentium 4 gehört in diese Kategorie. Diese Prozessoren
sind ganz gewöhnliche Exemplare, wie sie auch in Desktop-Rechnern zum
Einsatz kommen, mit hoher Verlustleistung, keinerlei Stromsparfunktionen
(von Throttling einmal abgesehen, siehe 4.5.4) und eher niedriger
zulässiger Maximaltemperatur, damit hohem Kühlbedarf. Ständiges
Lüfterrauschen und/oder starke Erwärmung der eher klobigen Geräte sind an
der Tagesordnung, zudem bedingt der hohe Energieverbrauch meist wenig
überzeugende Akkulaufzeiten trotz hoher Akkukapazitäten. Desktop-CPUs
werden typischerweise in sehr billigen Notebooks oder Desktop-Replacements
(also eher großen Geräten mit einer Ausstattung, die der von stationären
Rechnern Konkurrenz macht) verbaut.
Hierzu zählen vor allem Mobile Pentium 4-M (kurz mP4-M) und Mobile Athlon XP (kurz mA-XP [mit DECs Alphas hat der nichts zu tun, daher nicht mAXP]). Diese bieten alle Stromsparfunktionen, die man so braucht (dazu später mehr), verbraten aber dennoch maximal bis zu 30-40 W und sind aufgrund der dafür nötigen Kühlsysteme für sehr dünne Notebooks kaum geeignet. Zwischen mP4-M und Desktop-P4 ist der Mobile Pentium 4 angesiedelt, der die Stromsparfunktionen des mP4-M bietet, bei vollem Takt aber mit Kernspannungen vergleichbar denen von Desktop-Exemplaren läuft und dann auch ähnliche Verlustleistungen aufweist. Die Prozessoren dieser Kategorie sind ausnahmslos von Desktop-CPUs abgeleitete Designs (siehe 3.5.3.1).
Hierzu zählen vor allem der Pentium-M (Banias- und Dothan-Kern), der
Mobile Pentium III-M (kurz mPIII-M), die Low-Voltage-Versionen des Mobile
Athlon XP und der Transmeta Crusoe. Diese eignen sich auch für den Einsatz
in Subnotebooks, die typischerweise aufgrund der geringen Akkukapazitäten
sehr stromsparend sein müssen und keinen Platz für ein großzügig
dimensioniertes Kühlsystem bieten. Sie sind (mal abgesehen vom Crusoe)
oftmals auch in Low-Voltage- und Ultra-Low-Voltage-Versionen mit weiter
reduzierten Kernspannungen verfügbar, die z.B. in Subnotebooks,
Mini-Notebooks und Tablet-PCs zum Einsatz kommen. Man kann in dieser
Kategorie nochmals zwei Arten von Prozessoren unterscheiden:
Dies ist der klassische Ansatz. Hierhin gehören der mPIII-M, der mA-XP
und der mP4-M. Die Vertreter dieser Gattung sind im wesentlichen
Desktop-Prozessoren mit diversen Stromsparfunktionen (u.a. Reduktion von
Takt und Kernspannung in einer oder mehreren Stufen [Intel: SpeedStep,
AMD: PowerNow] und "Tiefschlaf-Modi" mit weiter reduzierter Stromaufnahme
gegenüber normalem Leerlauf [d.h. Einsatz des HLT-Befehls]).
Diese Prozessoren wurden speziell für den Einsatz als Mobilprozessoren
entworfen und haben sonst keine Entsprechung. Hierunter fallen
insbesondere Intels Pentium-M und Transmetas Crusoe.
Der Pentium-M ist in gewissem Sinne ein "klassischer" x86er - auf den
ersten Blick erkennt man einige Elemente des P6-Designs (also
PPro/PII/PIII/Celeron abzüglich P4-Celeron), was wenig verwundert, hatten
doch die Entwickler vorher am "Timna" gearbeitet, der eine Art Celeron mit
integriertem Grafikcore und Speichercontroller werden sollte; der
Prozessorbus ist eine Variante des Pentium-4-Busses mit niedrigerer
Spannung. Daneben finden sich aber auch jede Menge Dinge, die
implementiert wurden, um die Effizienz des Prozessors zu erhöhen und den
Stromverbrauch zu reduzieren: Eine verbesserte Sprungvorhersage, die
Abschaltung und lediglich gezielte Aktivierung von einzelnen Segmenten des
großen L2-Caches, die Möglichkeit zum separaten Abschalten von vielerlei
Prozessorteilen, deutlich reduzierte Leckströme (ab 0.13µ ein
ernstzunehmendes Problem) sowie endlich auch Speedstep mit mehr
Taktstufen. In der Summe handelt es sich um einen Prozessor, der bezüglich
Rechen- und Verlustleistung den mP4-M das Fürchten lehrt und hinsichtlich
der Mobiltauglichkeit endlich wieder an den mPIII-M anschließt.
Der Transmeta Crusoe ist gänzlich anders konzipiert: Dieser
VLIW-Prozessor (Very Long Instruction Word, die Datenworte sind 128 bzw.
256 Bit lang) führt sämtlichen x86-Code mittels seiner
Code-Morphing-Software in einer Art Emulation aus (womit er eigentlich
nicht auf x86 beschränkt ist, sondern auch ganz andere Architekturen
emulieren könnte), wobei zusätzlich der Programmablauf im Laufe der Zeit
weiter optimiert wird. Der Stromspartrick besteht darin, daß der
eigentliche Prozessorkern weitaus einfacher (und # damit: weniger
stromhungrig) gehalten werden kann als es für die Realisierung von
x86-Kompatibilität ganz in Hardware vonnöten wäre. Der große Durchbruch
blieb dem innovativen Konzept bisher verwehrt, waren doch die erzielten
Rechenleistungen eher moderat.
